Odd Soul

It has been quite some time since I last heard something as fresh and innovative as MuteMath’s latest album “Odd Soul”. The band has had some great moments in the past but nothing special enough to set them apart from the masses, at least not in any significant way.

All of this has changed though by means of their brilliant third album. The re-invention that had taken place here is staggering, to the point of a 180 degree turn. Gone are the overwhelming guitar effects and dominant synths. This is a mix of blues, jazz, rock and the occasional swing, all mixed together masterfully to create a unique sonic experience. Throughout the album the amount of tracks that are sub-par are few and far between, and that is something you don’t see every day .

Having to pick favorites is very hard but I think those next  few songs capture the high points of the album:

1) MuteMath – Prytania
2) MuteMath – Blood Pressure
3) MuteMath – One More

Grammatics

Bringing some new perspective in a genre that is getting crowded, come Grammatics. Their music combines melody, rhythm and climax, thanks to a charismatic frontman and the elaborately raveled cello that gives them a special identity.

Alas I was late to the party, as they have recently split up, but they have left us with some damn good music! Here are some of my favorites:

1) Grammatics – Shadow Committee

2) Grammatics – D.I.L.E.M.M.A.

3) Grammatics – Mutant Reverb

4) Grammatics – The Vague Archive

5) Grammatics – Cruel Tricks Of The Light

Luck

Luck is a concept that dates back to the beginning of our civilization. But is luck a fallacy or a fact?

In our so called modern society luck has a great influence in our culture, our habits and even our decisions. Some people play games of luck, in hope for a better life, sometimes becoming addicted in the process. Others hope for better luck by acquisition of lucky charms, and the adoption of symbols of luck. Other people make a fortune from the aforementioned ones.

My main concern is this: why do we chose to believe in luck with such ease? By accepting such a powerful concept, we give ourselves a means to comprehend situations we would otherwise have a hard time explaining. When we get caught up in the rain, we blame it to bad luck. Similarly when we win at poker, we thank our good luck and the all-mighty god of the cards. So it is understandable to mix whatever occurrence resulted in that chain of events with luck.

One way to define the misconception of luck, is randomness. Everything that happens around us is based (in no small part) on randomness, which in turn is another hard to analyze concept. I prefer to view random, as a web of facts and events that is far too long for the human mind to grasp. In turn what we consider to be a lucky or unlucky outcome of an event, actually has an explanation, a very complex one a that. The only incident, that I could ever consider genuinely random and luck-based, is the Big Bang that created our universe, since absolutely nothing had ever happened before that, and even that could be proved wrong is the years to come.

Trying to somewhat conclude, I would have to say that luck is a fact, but one we have an ill grasp of. When something unlikely happens in our favor, we should just be happy about the fact itself, and not its origin, because we would hit a dead end, and in turn resort to believe in luck . No amount of four-leaf clovers, rabbit’s feet and horseshoes can increase the likelihood of such happy occurrences, just like black cats and broken mirrors can decrease it. If you believe in god, then consider that he would have come up with a more meritocratic system than luck to reward and punish his followers…

Post War Years

Time for some fresh music! Post war years are an indie math band that has a unique style. Their music combines electronic elements, as well as guitar, bass and drums. The vocals are also very expressive and deviously harmonized. Their first album was released last year, and the follow-up is close so stay tuned…

Here are a couple of songs I picked from their first album titled “The Greats And The Happenings”:

1) Post War Years – Whole World On Its Head

2) Post War Years – White Lies

3) Post War Years – Soul Owl

4) Post War Years – Black Morning

It has been quite some time since my last music post, so here are a few treats for you. First off is Barricades from Interpol’s latest album, followed by a remix of Mogwai’s Auto Rock done by Errors. Then we have Foals (as expected) with one of my favorite songs off their album Total Life Forever, Alabaster, and a radio cover of the Swedish House Mafia song One (Your Name). Last but not least come Silversun Pickups with my personal favorites Future Foe Scenarios and Growing Old Is Getting Old… I hope you like them!

The Time Dilemma

This is the one thing that always eludes me. I never seem to have time for anything and I never have anything to do in the time I have. It sounds confusing and it is…

I can rarely say that a day has been fulfilling, I always feel like the day has passed and I still have so much to do… I even find myself wanting more time to spend on thinking (about any possible matter), than actually do something using my body.

On the other hand I often find my self having surplus time and nothing to do with it. It seems that I only have lust to do things that I enjoy and avoid doing anything tedious by any means necessary. I know that everyone will try to avoid or postpone doing something they do not want to, but I feel like I have a harder time than most taming my desires.

This labyrinth seems impossible to get out of, but it is a necessity to do so. Whenever there is something you want to do, you can’t ever make enough time for it, but when there is something you don’t want to do, you have all the time in the world…

Minus The Bear

Time for some fresh stuff. Minus The Bear is a band I didn’t pay much attention to the first time around, and I have come to find it was a mistake. They have a complex ,although easy to listen to, sound that is pretty balanced in every aspect: melody, rhythm and innovation. Here are some songs for starters, but their work deserves to be heard in albums, so if you like what you hear I suggest you move in deeper..

PS:Pay attention to “Thanks For The Killer Game Of Crisco Twister” from 2:12 onwards ;)

1) Minus The Bear – When We Escape

2) Minus The Bear – Knights

3) Minus The Bear – Pachuca Sunrise

4) Minus The Bear – Into The Mirror

5) Minus The Bear – Thanks For The Killer Game Of Crisco Twister

The Quest For Contentment.

It has occurred to me many times, that in order to get out of a situation we are uncomfortable with we often have to be drastic about it. I seem to notice this even more when something that would normally make me happy takes place, but I can’t quite enjoy it. There are other things that hold me back, and they need to be taken care of.

The real dilemma is born when the very thing that is ruining our happiness is a big part of it at the same time. It is often the case that a person is the reason of our discontent. While that person may contribute greatly towards the outcome we wish upon, he/she may also have a negative effect on many other aspects of our life. They problem is that while we may acknowledge these things, we can’t quite step forward and clear things up, be that of fear that our relationship with that person may come to an end, or that he/she may be hard to replace, there are always risks to take.

What usually makes things escalate is the fact that we choose to ignore the problem from the beginning. Things could have been much clearer by now, but we choose to postpone what we find difficult to deal with. A time comes when every problem has to be dealt with no matter what the consequences may be, and we better buckle up and prepare for them. Nothing and no one is irreplaceable, some could be harder to replace, some needn’t be replaced.

Errors

No need for many words here, listen and you will see, I can’t think of a person who would not enjoy these songs. I find the Errors to be really creative and relaxing, but also able to bring out strong emotions depending on the mood. Don’t skip these songs, you will be missing out… seriously.

1) Errors – National Prism

2) Errors – A Rumor In Africa

3) Errors – Toes

4) Errors – Germany

Uniqueness//Potentiality

Life works in mysterious ways, lots of things happen all the time, and I have a theory for most of them. Be that consciously or subconsciously, I have an opinion on almost everything and there is one in my head about the uniqueness (or not) of every person.

I have come to the conclusion that every individual is indeed special, but he/she has to “work” in order to truly be one of a kind. Every one of us has a potential to be great or unique, but only a few of us take advantage of it. It is hateful to think that you are superior to others, but it is also potentially an understatement to say you are no different.

One thing that parts some people from others is their perception of the world, I see so many people living in their own bubble. I say that with no hidden malevolence, I truly believe that these people are happy about it, and a lot of them actually acknowledge their state of mind and make a choice to not trouble themselves with theories and explications. And to be honest I sometimes envy their bliss of ignorance, but I always eventually am thankful I can see things the way I do.

An example of this is that most of the people that will read this post won’t understand a thing, a few may be able to get it, and even fewer will pop their bubble and join me on the other side. I am happy for each one of those things for a different reason…
